When
alternate layers of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials are arranged in a series array, various types of thyristors can be produced. The term thyristor is the generic name for solid-state devices that have electrical characteristics similar to those of thyratron tubes. Three popular types of thyristors are the reverse-blocking triode thyristor called the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), the bidirectional triode thyristor, called the triac, and a four-terminal thyristor called the bilateral switch.
